Working across Devon
Groundworks across Devon.
Grants Groundworks is based in Paignton and works across Devon, delivering groundworks and civil engineering for homeowners, builders, developers and architects. Over more than 25 years, our in-house team has worked on projects of every size – from single driveways to large commercial and civil contracts.
This page gives an overview of how we work across the county. For local detail on ground conditions, planning and the work we do in a particular place, see our pages for Plymouth, Exeter, Torbay and the other towns we cover.

Local ground conditions
One county, very different ground.
Devon has some of the most varied geology in England. Dartmoor is a granite upland; South Devon is dominated by Devonian slates and limestones; much of mid and north Devon sits on the sandstones and shales of the Culm; and the red Permian and Triassic rocks of central and east Devon give the county its famous red soil.
Responsibilities for planning and drainage are split too: Devon County Council is the lead local flood authority for most of the county, while Plymouth and Torbay councils fulfil that role in their own areas. Understanding both the ground and the approvals involved is part of how we help projects run smoothly.
